I know it's been a long time, but if you will be persistent just a little while longer, you will be rewarded. Be sure that what you are doing is the right thing for you. A clear conscience will keep you in productive forward motion.

Avoid conflict with your anatomy: start taking care of yourself. Yo've got to give yourself time to regenerate. If you would take more time to plan, things wouldn't be as complicated. You have to have a target before you take aim.

Lesbian? Gay? Alcoholic?
Alex Liberacki
Is there a relationship between alcoholism and AIDS? According to the San Francisco AIDS/Substance Abuse Task Force: "Drugs and alcohol are known to cause a variety of health problems. Recent research has indicated that alcohol, as well as such street drugs as amphetamines (speed), marijuana, and nitrite inhalants (poppers), all damage the immune system, leaving the user open to infection and cancer." It is important for individuals to evaluate their alcohol and drug use.

I have just finished reading Dennis Wholey's The Courage to Change (Houghton Mifflin, 1984) and he totally ignores lesbians in his chapter on homosexuality. Are there any books which focus on lesbian alcoholics?
Yes! Jean Swallow's Out From Under: Sober Dykes and Our Friends is available from Spinster's Ink, 803 DeHaro Street, San Francisco, CA 94107 for $8.95.
Out From Under is a collection of essay's, short stories, and poems that cover such topics as "The Days of Our Recovery," "The Healers Among Us," "The Politics of Our Addictions," and "The Way Forward." It is good reading for gay men as well as lesbians and nonalcoholics as well as alcoholics.

Highlight of the New Mayfield series in May is Queen Kelly (1929), starring Gloria Swanson and directed by Von Stroheim.
As far as we know, it is not gay in any sense and cannot be passed off as such, even though in earlier films Swanson had done drag highlight. Queen Kelly is beautifully. Still, it is a playing May 3 and 4, at 7:30

Otherwise, on May 5 the New Mayfield is running Murnau's 1927 film, Sunrise. Probably not gay, either, except that it Janet. Gaynor and we all know how Murnau died. Sunrise plays at 3, 5, and 7.
